Pine Grosbeak Pinicola enucleator

In Washington, rare breeder in Olympics, along Cascade crest, and in mountains of northeastern part of state in subalpine forests and parklands dominated by mountain hemlock, subalpine fir, and Engelmann spruce. No "confirmed" BBA records from our area, but three "probable" and four "possible" records suggestive of likely breeding. Favorable nesting habitat found at elevations above 4,000 feet along Cascade crest north of Snoqualmie Pass and east in Wenatchee Mountains to Navaho Peak, as mapped by Washington Gap report (Smith et al. 1997).
