White-headed Woodpecker Picoides albolarvatus

Limited to Kittitas County, where uncommon and local in ponderosa pine zone. Thought to be declining, probably due to reduction of favored mature ponderosa pine forests. Prefers fairly open pine stands in proximity to high-quality riparian zones (Stepniewski 1999). Often excavates nest cavity low in snags. BBA records do not support predicted range in central county mapped by Washington Gap report (Smith et al. 1997).
