Flammulated Owl
Otus
flammeolus
Uncommon in open conifer stands in lower mixed-conifer forest zones of Kittitas County. Tends to be found in dry forest with low shrub layer and ponderosa pine component. However, local distribution not well understood as suitable-appearing habitat sometimes not used. Probably under-recorded due to somewhat limited nocturnal survey efforts, low-density distribution, and access difficulties. Flammulated Owls do not arrive in Washington until late May and may not reach peak abundance until June due to their dependence on invertebrate prey.
