Caspian Tern
Hydroprogne
caspia
Nests on sparsely vegetated islands in Columbia River and elsewhere across Columbia Plateau, and on dredge-spoil islands in saltwater bays. Confirmed breeding from single nesting site in our four-county area, below Wanapum Dam on Columbia River. In 1994, scouts observed at gravelly industrial site north of Renton that has since been developed. Colony of several thousand pairs quickly established on and as quickly displaced from (by 1995) construction site just north of our area at Everett. More recently, another colonization met similar fate on abandoned barge in Commencement Bay at Tacoma.
